The Background

The Nanaimo Sport and Social Club hosting the Island’s own, 1st annual beach soccer tournament on July 7-8, 2007. We are proud to haveoffered this event in such a prestige location: Parksville BC, one of the most beautiful beaches in Canada.

We anticipate even greater numbers next year with teams coming from all over the mainland, Vancouver Island and around BC.

Beach Soccer started in Brazil and has grown to be an international game. The participation of internationally renowned players helped to expand television coverage to large audiences in over 170 countries worldwide, making Beach Soccer one of the fastest growing professional sports in the world.

What is Beach Soccer?

This game is hot! Played on a soft sand surface, this sport allows players of all levels to try out their improvisation, skill and agility. The compact pitch allows players to score from anywhere. This leads to fast paced, high scoring games. With an irregular playing surface, the ball tends to be kept more in the air than regular soccer. The rules of the game are generally the same as grass soccer except the following:

  • 5 on 5 (4 players + a keeper)
  • Unlimited substitutions on the fly
  • No offsides
  • No shoes, cleats or shin pads (but socks can be worn to protect feet)
  • Two 14-minute halves
  • Kick-ins rather than throw-ins
  • Goal kicks are taken by the goalie using his hands.
  • 30 X 50 yard fields
  • Smaller nets
  • Every beach soccer match has a winner
